Scale-less Death Adder (A. antarcticus)

One of the most fascinating mutation/morphs of any Australia Snake currently available. Scale-less Death Adders truly are a weird snake, the idea of a snake without scales is simply hard to believe. But without these scale you get to see the vibrant skin colours, including shades of red, white and grey. The name scale-less is not actually correct as these snakes do in fact have scales, most just have some scales on the head and all ventral scales. However rarely some have half and half, with half of the dorsal surface (including head an tail) and all of the ventral surface having scales and the other half is scale-less. This is a very rare occurrence with only a few known, hopefully as more breeding occurs with this morph will be see more and more variations.

There are many stories about Scale-less Death Adders and how difficult they are to keep and maintain, especially when it comes to shedding. However I have found that they are no harder to keep them normal adders, I actually keep them in exactly the same set-up as my normal Adders and I have had no problems.

The scale-less line actually resulted from breeding two normal SE QLD Death Adders, and to my knowledge no one has yet bred scale-less to scale-less, but that should change this coming season. This mutation of adders is currently maintained in a relatively small amount of collections, but in the next few years they should become more readily available!

There is actually a line of Scale-less Barkley Death Adders but this line has not been reproduced to the same extent as the SE QLD line. The Barkley line also has full scale-less animals , half and half animals and suspected hets so hopefully some will become available within the next few years.
